AMSTERDAM — Eight people were injured in a bizarre stabbing incident at a shopping centre in the northern town of Emmeloord on Thursday.
Seven of the victims were customers and the eighth was a shop assistant, a police spokesperson said. A 29-year-old local man was arrested moments after the attack.
He allegedly started lashing out indiscriminately at about 4pm in the supermarket on Europalaan in the centre of the town.
The police spokesperson was not able to give information on Thursday evening about the man's identity or a possible motive. The victims' injuries were described as not being too serious. They are getting counselling from Victims Support.
A witness told local broadcaster 'Omroep Flevoland' that the suspect attacked two people without warning and then turned on other shoppers. One youth was wounded in the arm and a woman was struck in the eye.
The speaker said a police officer was "luckily" in the area and was able to intervene before more people were injured.
Justice officials said on Thursday night there was still no clarity about the motive for the attack, but there was no question of a robbery or theft at the time.
