Eight million extra for World Food Programme
The decision was announced by Dutch development minister at the World Bank meeting.11 April 2008
WASHINGTON - Dutch development minister Bert Koenders has announced that The Netherlands will contribute an extra EUR 8 million to the United Nations World Food Programme.
Speaking in Washington, where he is attending a meeting of the World Bank, Koenders said he shares British prime minister Gordon Brown's concerns about the current rise in food prices. He described it as having dramatic social consequences, especially for the world's poorest people.
In many countries the price of a simple meal has increased by 50 percent in recent months. Koenders blames this on the lack of international free trade and a failure to invest in farming in Africa in recent years.
