AMSTERDAM — Reputed Dutch drugs baron Henk R. — known as the Black Cobra — has requested that he be extradited to the Netherlands first rather than the US, where he is wanted on charges of ecstasy smuggling.

R. was arrested at the request of the US in Spain last year and is still being detained there. But his lawyer wants R. to first serve out a 3.5-year jail term he has not fully completed in the Netherlands.

But it was revealed in June that the Dutch public prosecution no longer considered it necessary for R. — a renowned figure in the Dutch underworld — to serve out the rest of his Dutch jail term.

The defence lawyer claimed at the time that after consulting with the Justice Ministry, the prosecution had placed greater importance on US rather than Dutch wishes.

But the lawyer was surprised by this, explaining that R. still had 14-months jail time to serve out in the Netherlands, newspaper De Volkskrant reported on Monday.

He wants R. to be first extradited to the Netherlands, before his extradition to the US.

The main reason for this is that if he is then extradited to the US from the Netherlands, R. can eventually be allowed to serve out a possible US-imposed jail term in a Dutch prison.
