BRUSSELS (AFP) - EU antitrust regulators approved Danone's takeover of Dutch baby food group Numico on Wednesday after the French food group committed to sell some overlapping businesses.

Danone has offered EUR 13 billion in cash to take over Numico, which makes the Cow and Gate and Olvarit baby food brands and claims to be the European and Asia Pacific market leader in infant nutrition.

"In view of the remedies offered, I am satisfied that competition will remain vigorous after the merger," EU Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said.

Danone agreed to sell Numico's baby milk and drink business in France, its own baby meals, milk, drinks and snacks activities in Belgium, and its baby meal and snacks activities in The Netherlands.
