Dutch market gardeners are sustaining losses of about 30 million euros a week as a result of the EHEC Entero Haemorrhagic E Coli bacteria outbreak in Germany which has claimed 15 lives.

A spokesperson for the market-garden sector organisation Productschap Tuinbouw says the figure is based on a rough estimate.

The sector organisation says locating the infected source in Germany takes top priority. "That’s when we will be able to take concrete measures to fight the bacteria," says the spokesperson. "This way, we hope to restore consumer confidence in salad vegetables and revive sales."

Produce affected by the outbreak includes cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce and peppers.
