UITGEEST – Water company PWN has found the e-coli bacteria in drinking water supplied to homes on three streets in Uitgeest, according to its website. The residents of the Burgemeester van Rosmalenstraat, Westergeest and the Terp have been advised to boil water for two minutes before drinking, as a precaution.

PWN says the contamination almost certainly resulted from works being carried out on a sewer very close to the water pipes. The company says there is no danger of the contamination spreading because the part of the pipe network affected was shut off from the rest of the network during the work.

The work on the sewer has been completed and the water pipes have been cleaned. PWN has taken samples and expects the results on Thursday. If no bacteria is found in these samples then the recommendation to boil the water will be lifted.

PWN stressed that there is no connection between this and the extensive contamination at a pump station in Hoofddorp last month. About 180,000 households in the Kennemerland region had to deal with contaminated water for almost a week in that case.
