AMSTERDAM — Dutchman Jaap de Hoop Scheffer is expected to remain as NATO secretary-general after 2007.

NATO officials said on Tuesday night that De Hoop Scheffer's mandate will be extended by another two years.

The officials said they did not expect any resistance from the military's alliance's 26 member states.

NATO made an informal decision back in December to ask De Hoop Scheffer if he was prepared to remain in the position.

The Christian Democrat CDA Dutch politician said he was.
