A Dutchman who tried to smuggle 60 kilos of heroin into Britain has been arrested by British police near the entrance of the Channel Tunnel in France.

The drugs, which were hidden in a suitcase, have an estimated street value of 3.4 million euros, British customs say. The man was arrested on 1 August and arraigned a day later. He is to make his next court appearance on 11 August.

The news comes two days after Dutch police arrested six Dutch nationals in connection with the seizure of a huge cocaine haul in the British port of Southampton in June. The 1.2-tonne stash, worth up to 343 million euros, is said to be the largest ever cocaine haul seized in Britain.
