A 51-year-old Dutchman has been arrested in the southern town of Geleen on suspicion of helping his wife kill three of her babies.

The bodies of the three infants were found in the couple's suburban garden on 2 September. The 41-year old mother had been arrested a few days earlier after the local Youth Care Bureau had alerted the police.

Her partner was initially not under suspicion, but he has now been accused of being an accomplice to multiple murder or manslaughter. The Public Prosecutor's office in the city of Maastricht said that the man is also suspected of possessing child pornography.

The woman's case will be heard no earlier than 7 October, the court said.

Neighbours told reporters that the couple had three other children. Judicial authorities are refusing to give any information about them, other than that they are "taken good care of".
