Customs officers arrested a Dutchman smuggling 5.2 kilos (11.5 pounds) of cocaine hidden in string beans at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport, police said Wednesday.

The 23-year-old man arrived on a flight from Suriname on Sunday and aroused suspicion because he was carrying vegetables in his baggage, airport police said in a statement.

Each bean contained a plastic tube with the drug with a total value estimated at about 200,000 euros (240,000 dollars), Schiphol police spokesman Robert van Kapel told AFP.

The identity of the man, who lives in Rotterdam and who was kept in police detention, was not given.
