AMSTERDAM — Defence Minister Henk Kamp issued citations on Monday to soldiers from the Dutchbat III unit that were involved in the fall of the Bosnian enclave of Srebrenica.

The badge serves as a symbol of recognition for the 850 soldiers who were at Srebrenica when the Serbian army overran the UN-declared safe haven in July 1995.

Some 500 troops attended the ceremony at the Johan Willem Friso barracks in Assen on Monday. A plaque was also unveiled.

The ceremony sparked a protest outside the Assen barracks by dozens of Germany-resident Bosnians and several protestors were seen outside the Lower House of Parliament in The Hague.

The protestors believe the Dutchbat troops should have done more to prevent the mass murder of up to 8,000 Muslim men and boys by Serbian troops.
