Dutch woman wins Future for Nature Award

Dutch environmental campaigner Maggie Muurmans is one of three recipients of the Future for Nature Award 2009.

ARNHEM - She received her prize from the renowned British documentary maker and environmentalist Sir David Attenborough at Burgers Zoo in Arnhem on Friday afternoon.

The prize, sponsored by the Arnhem zoo, is awarded for successful conservation projects.

The 29-year-old Maggie Murmans set up a scheme on an island group near Sumatra to protect endangered turtles.

She also helped local people develop eco-tourism projects. The other two awards went to an Iranian for a project protecting the Asian cheetah and an Ivorian for conservation work in Ivory Coast's Tanoé Forest.
