AMSTERDAM —A Dutch woman, 18, has been caught with 20 kilos of cocaine in the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean.
The unnamed woman was arrested as she was about to board a flight from Punta Cana Airport to Amsterdam, a spokesperson for the police drugs unit DNCD said. The drugs hidden in her baggage have an estimated street value of EUR 1 million.
She admitted she was recruited by a drugs gang to smuggle the consignment into the Netherlands.
Over the years the Dominican Republic has become one of the most important transmit points for the smuggling of cocaine from Colombia to Europe and the US.
Currently there are 45 Dutch people in jail in the Dominican Republic, almost all for drugs offences. This is the largest group of European prisoners in the Caribbean country.
