AMSTERDAM — The Netherlands beat Ukraine 3-0 on Sunday to clinch the European Under-21 Championship.
Ajax striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar, who was overlooked for the Dutch World Cup squad, scored twice in the first half of the final in Porto. Feyenoord Rotterdam's Nicky Hofs added the third goal in the last minute after Ukraine's Olaxandr Romanchuck was sent off for two bookable offences.
Thousands of fans turned up at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport on Monday to welcome the team home. Many hoped the victory was a foretaste of success at the World Cup in Germany.
Huntelaar opened the scoring against Ukraine within 11 minutes after collecting a pass from Hofs.
He added his second from the penalty spot three minutes before half time when Olexandr Yatsenko was penalised for handball. This took Huntelaar's tournament tally to four goals, making him the leading goalscorer in Portugal.
Hofs scored his third goal of the championship and sealed the victory shortly after Romanchuck was dismissed.
