AMSTERDAM – The US has high hopes that the Netherlands will continue to keep troops in Afghanistan after the mission to Uruzgan expires in mid 2008.

"I understand that the Dutch will remain at a number of bases," US ambassador to the Netherlands Ronald Arnall told television station RTL4 on Tuesday.

Arnall says the US hopes to hear this summer which bases that will be. The Netherlands has almost 1,800 troops in Afghanistan at the moment. Most of these soldiers are stationed in Uruzgan, the rest are at NATO ISAF bases in Kandahar and Kabul.

The mission was scheduled to end in mid 2008. The new government is not ruling out an extension of the mission however and will take a decision this summer on whether this will be the case and how troops may continue to participate in the NATO force in Afghanistan.
