AMSTERDAM — There were 516,000 people registered as unemployed in the Netherlands in the period February to April this year, according to the latest statistics from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS).

The CBS — which refers to itself internationally as Statistics Netherlands — said on Thursday that when seasonal factors are taken into account, unemployment came to half a million people.

Over the past three months, 6.9 percent of the Dutch labour force was jobless, while a year ago 6.7 percent were unemployed, the CBS said.

The number of unemployed people was 16,000 higher from February-April 2005 than in the same period one year earlier.

This is the smallest annual change since early 2002.

Over the past twelve months, the unemployment rate has fluctuated up and down. In the summer of 2004 there was a small decline in unemployment, followed by six months in which unemployment rose by an average 4,000 per month.

Over the past six months, the growth rate has been stable.
