Dutch truckers allowed to ignore police
From 1 November Dutch truck drivers will be allowed to ignore police officers flagging them down if they suspect they might be fake. They should then phone the emergency number 112 to find out whether they were right.
If the police turn out to be genuine the driver has to stop anyway.
The measure, which will be in force for a trial period, is the result of an agreement between the police and the transport sector and is aimed at tackling lorryjacking. A trick commonly used by robbers is to pose as police officers carrying out a spot check.
The transport umbrella organisation TLN is extremely pleased with the arrangement. Lorryjacking results in losses of around 350 million euros per year.
Another option being studied is an emergency button in the driver's cabin connected to a private switchboard which can then alert the police. © Radio Netherlands Worldwide
