THE NETHERLANDS - The Dutch trade union federation FNV is marking Workers Memorial Day on Monday by flying the flag at half-mast to commemorate the victims of work-related accidents.

The International Labour Organisation says that every 15 seconds, a person dies somewhere in the world in a work-related accident or from a work-related disease. This would amounts to a total of two million deaths a year.

Two years ago, the FNV launched an investigation into the situation here in The Netherlands. The results showed that 2,500 people a year die as a result of a work-related illness or accidents, three times as many as are killed in traffic accidents on Dutch roads.
