WELLINGTON – Three Dutch tourists were charged with lying to police in New Zealand on Monday.
The three claimed earlier this month that they had been victims of an armed robbery of their camper, but police say the story was fabricated.
The report of the robbery received a great deal of media attention in New Zealand. 18 months ago there was commotion when a Dutch couple was robbed at gunpoint in Haruru Falls. The woman was also raped. The perpetrators had forced their way into the couple's camper.
A 30-year-old man was sentenced to mandatory psychiatric treatment and 10 years in prison, the second man, aged 27, was sentenced to nine years in prison, six of which unconditional.
The three Dutch nationals now charged with lying had claimed that they had been robbed of digital cameras, laptops and cash.
