The ministry of defence says three generals travelled from the Netherlands to visit Dutch troops still serving in Afghanistan on Saturday. They had Christmas dinner with the servicemen and women at ‘Dutch Corner’ at Kandahar air base.

Dutch army commander General Rob Bertholee, air forces commander General Jac Jansen and interim navy commander General Ton van Ede presented 52 soldiers with NATO decorations as “tokens of the international community’s appreciation and gratitude”.

The three generals had brief meetings with Dutch soldiers at Camp Mirage in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. The logistics facility is used for regular Dutch transport flights to and from Kandahar.
