Dutch to speed up Antillean political reform
Extra staff should be provided to ensure that planned political reforms are properly carried out, says senate speaker31 March 2008
Senate speaker Yvonne Timmerman Buck says that the Netherlands should provide the Dutch Antillean islands of Bonaire, St Eustace and Saba with extra staff to ensure that planned political reforms are properly carried out.
Ms Timmerman Buck made her remarks at the end of a visit to the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba, which are independent countries within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
A process of political reform was initiated two years ago, in which the islands of Curaçao and St Martin voted for autonomy in referendums. Bonaire, St Eustace and Saba decided to become special municipalities of the Netherlands.
The Hague wants to speed up the reform process, but Ms Timmerman Buck said this means the government should be prepared to put additional staff at the islands' disposal.
