Dutch to scrap statute of limitations on serious crimes

25th January 2011, Comments 0 comments

Daily newspaper reports that Justice Minister Ivo Opstelten will today publish a bill which, if adopted, will scrap the statute of limitations on crimes which carry a minimum sentence of 12 years or longer, such as rape, murder or human trafficking.

At present, only crimes carrying a life sentence are without a statute of limitations. One of the reasons for the proposed change in the law is the fact that modern forensic techniques enable police to solve crimes even years after the fact.
