Dutch teenage yachtswoman crossing Atlantic

Laura Dekker, the Dutch 15-year-old who is attempting to sail solo round the world, set off from Cape Verde islands at the weekend to cross the Atlantic. On her weblog, she says the 4,074-kilometre journey to Saint Martin in the Caribbean should take about three weeks.

After a good start, her two-master yacht, Guppy, is now becalmed. She says she is killing time listening to music, cooking and watching the sea to catch glimpses of dolphins.

Ms Dekker hopes to become the youngest person to circumnavigate the world single-handedly. Initially, her attempt was scuppered by a Dutch court which ruled she was too young to make the journey. The ban was later lifted and she launched her attempt on 21 August.
