Dutch teenage sailor reaches Canaries

Dutch teenage sailor Laura Dekker has reached the Canary Islands on the first leg of her around-the-world trip. She set off from Gibraltar on Saturday, in an attempt to become the youngest person to circumnavigate the globe single-handed.

Laura will stay in one of the Canary Islands' ports for two months until the end of the hurricane season. Her spokesperson told reporters she would spend the time on school work.

The young sailor's departure was preceded by lengthy legal wrangling with the Dutch Youth Care authorities, who tried to get a court injunction against the 14-year-old's sailing trip. In the end the case was thrown out.
