Dutch still blocking Schengen expansion

9th December 2011, Comments 0 comments

The Netherlands is continuing to block the accession of Romania and Bulgaria to Europe’s open-border Schengen group of countries - despite massive pressure from other EU members.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte is demanding concrete evidence that the two countries are tackling corruption and organised crime. He says they aren’t doing enough to deal with either issue.

The Dutch position means that EU leaders will address the question again when they meet in March. However, Mr Rutte is making no promises: “I don’t rule out that the Netherlands will again say no,” he insists.
