Dutch sportsmen and women of the year awarded
The Dutch Sports People of the Year were announced at a special gala last night in The Hague. Sportsman of the year went to gymnast Epke Zonderland and Sportswoman for 2011 is swimmer Ranomi Kromowidjojo.
The Sport Team of the Year went to the baseball team that recently won the world championships against Cuba in Panama and their coach Brian Farley was named Sports Coach of the Year. The best handicapped Sportsperson is sailor Thierry Schmitter and the talent award went to young athlete Dafne Schippers.
Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, who played for the Netherlands 130 times, and who retired earlier this year after a long career, received the Fanny Blankers-Koen Career Prize. The 'Nobel prize for Sport' was introduced by the Dutch Olympic organisation NOCNSF to honour sports legends.
