ZEIST – The Dutch spent an average of EUR 141 on cosmetics in 2006. A total of EUR 2.3 billion was spent on cosmetic products in the Netherlands last year, an increase of 4 percent compared to the previous year.

The Netherlands Cosmetics Association attributed the growth to the improving economy, the good weather during the summer, and the success of many new products.

The fact that the weather was sunnier than usual was clearly a contributing factor: sales of sun products increased by 13 percent. Deodorant (up 6 percent), fragrances (up 6 percent), and oral hygiene products (up 7 percent) also sold well.

The Cosmetics Association expects the ageing of the population to be a positive boost for the industry.

"Cosmetics producers are paying special attention to older men and women. That is an attractive market that has plenty to spend," the association said.
