THE HAGUE – The Netherlands has asked German to help with the reconstruction efforts in the Afghan province of Uruzgan.

The Hague has submitted a formal request to the government in Berlin, German press agency DPA reported on Monday.

The German minister for development cooperation Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul will make a decision on the request in the coming days. If she gives the green light, Uruzgan could become the focal point of German reconstruction efforts in southern Afghanistan.

The Dutch commander in Uruzgan, Hans van Griensven, said cooperation from Germany would be "more than welcome." The head of the Afghanistan department at the German foreign ministry Michael Koch showed "much enthusiasm" during a recent visit to Tarin Kowt in Uruzgan.
