AMSTERDAM — The Dutch public saved EUR 9.7 billion in 2005, down from EUR 14.3 billion the year before, statistics agency CBS reported on Friday.

In 2003 the public added EUR 16 billion to their savings for a rainy day.

The Dutch public has a total of EUR 211 billion in saving accounts, compared with EUR 185 billion in 2003, the CBS said.

The agency blamed the 30 percent drop in 2005 on the weak economy in the last few years. households have less at the end of the month to put away in a savings account.
