Dutch rower rescued from Atlantic Ocean
Dutch rower Tom Sauer and his team mate Tom Fancett were rescued by a passing cruise ship after their boat capsized in the Atlantic Ocean on Tuesday.
After eight days at sea, ‘Team Tom’ was surprised by an exceptionally big wave. Their boat capsized and sank right before their eyes. The two rowers were just barely able to grab their life raft, life jackets and emergency bag. They floated about in their life raft for ten hours before they were rescued.
"We are obviously very disappointed that the boat sank, but first and foremost very happy to have survived and we are very grateful to our rescuers,” Sauer and Fancett said in a first reaction.
The two rowers were taking part in the Atlantic Rowing Race, a race over no less than 3,000 nautical miles; nearly 5,000 kilometres.
They intended to row from the Canary island of La Gomera to Barbados in the Caribbean.
