The Dutch queen has postponed a planned visit to Oman. Queen Beatrix was due to travel to Oman with Crown Prince Willem-Alexander and Princess Máxima on Monday for a three-day visit.

The decision to put off the trip was taken in consultation with the Omani authorities, according to the Dutch Government Information Service. “Current developments demand every attention and it is therefore better that the visit should be made later,” the service said.

The opposition Labour Party earlier called for the trip to be postponed given the unrest in Oman and the region. Labour MP Frans Timmermans warned that the queen could be unwillingly drawn into the political argument in Oman, where opponents of Sultan Qaboos bin Said’s authoritarian regime have been holding demonstrations. The coalition VVD party and Christian Democrats also advised against the visit.
