Dutch pupils getting worse at arithmetic

An international study shows Dutch children have difficulty grasping concepts on geometry and measurements.

THE NETHERLANDS – Children in Dutch primary schools are getting worse at arithmetic.

According to an international research, the level of year six Dutch pupils has deteriorated since 1995. The researchers who tested pupils between the ages of 9 and 10 in 36 countries say Dutch children have difficulty with geometric shapes and measurements.

The Netherlands ranks ninth place for arithmetic skills while Singapore is top of the international arithmetic chart.
