The Dutch police have launched an investigation into whether an international paedophile network is behind crèche sex abuse suspect Robert Mikelsons.

At a New Year's reception, police chief Ruud Bik told the press, "We have information that there may be an international network,"

The team of 20 investigators, which includes detectives, digital specialists and sex abuse experts is looking into the possibility that Robert Mikelsons was part of a network involved in producing and distributing child pornography.

The investigation led by the Dutch Prosecution Office is cooperating with the Dutch Serious Crime squad, the Dutch Forensic Institute, Interpol, Europol and Eurojust. This is in addition to the investigation being carried out by the police in Amsterdam. In this case, progress has been made as the suspect has finally revealed his computer passwords to police. His computer was so well secured that police were unable to access its files.

Robert Mikelsons is suspected of abusing very young children at crèches where he worked. He had already been prosecuted for possession of child pornography in Germany. Although he held a Dutch passport, he was originally from Latvia.
