Dutch police have found large amounts of heavy illegal fireworks from Poland in raids on homes up and down the country.

The fireworks were smuggled into the country via a transport company in the Netherlands. The company was unaware of this. Police say they have confiscated more than 3100 kilos of fireworks.

The explosives were ordered via the internet. Police have investigated more than 240 deliveries. Illegal fireworks were found during house raids up and down the country. More than 20 people have been arrested.

In recent years, police have clamped down on the possession of illegal fireworks. Fireworks in the Netherlands are only allowed to be set off during New Year's Eve unless special permission has been granted and can only be sold in the days leading up to the New Year's festivities from licensed premises.
