Dutch police could patrol in skullcaps: official
The Netherlands justice minister is considering putting police out in patrols wearing skullcaps in a bid to counter attacks on Jews, a spokesman said Friday.
Ahmed Marcouch, a Labour lawmaker of Moroccan origin, recently suggested that police dress as civilians with kippas in neighbourhoods where Jews are often insulted or beaten up.
Justice Minister Hirsch Ballin "thinks that this method is not in contradiction with the law and is therefore a possible option," his spokesman Wim van der Weegen said.
"The minister has promised that in coming months a concrete programme will be presented by the government to fight anti-semitism and discrimination," he added.
According to Marcouch, too many anti-semitic acts are unpunished due to a lack of proof or witnesses.
In the past, a Dutch police officer pretended to be gay in order to arrest a man who would contact homosexuals over the Internet and rob them later.
In 2009, the Dutch centre for information about Israel counted 167 incidents of insults, physical violence and attacks on synagogues in the Netherlands compared to 108 in 2008.
