The Hague - Nine people, including three Britons and a Colombian, were arrested in the Netherlands on suspicion of planning to take two people hostage, Dutch prosecutors said on Friday.

"With the arrests of nine suspects in Amsterdam last (Thursday) night, investigators probably prevented two pending kidnappings in the criminal underworld," it said in a statement.

"Among those arrested are three British citizens with extremely violent reputations" and criminal records, it added. "They apparently came to the Netherlands at the end of August to carry out the kidnappings."

The other suspects include four Dutch citizens and a Colombian, according to the statement.

Three firearms were seized in the investigation.

A spokesman would not give any further information on the targets or motive for the planned kidnappings.
