Dutch police arrest 642 people during New Year's Eve

Police across the Netherlands have handed over a total of 642 suspects to the Public Prosecutor's Office.

On Monday, Summary proceedings will be held in The Hague, Amsterdam and Utrecht. At least 23 cases will be tried immediately, 44 later this week. The remaining cases are yet to be assessed by the Public Prosecutor's Office.

Out of the 642 suspects, 243 are accused of attacking other people, 115 are charged with acts of violence against police officers, fire fighters and personnel of other public services. The remaining cases involved various other punishable acts.  

Fines and sentences for offences committed during New Year's night have been increased in an attempt to curb disorder during the celebrations.
