THE NETHERLANDS - Dutch Development Cooperation Minister Bert Koenders has pledged an additional EUR 2 million in aid to Myanmar, in addition to the EUR 1 million already donated. The money will go to help the victims of Cyclone Nargis, which has claimed an estimated 130,000 lives since it struck five weeks ago.

The aid effort was hampered by the military junta's reluctance to accept foreign involvement and Koenders wanted to make sure that the aid would actually reach those in need before making the extra funds available.

On Thursday, the minister attended a meeting in Rome at which aid organisations informed him of the current situation in Myanmar. He says he was particularly encouraged to hear that helicopters are now available to take aid to people in the worst-hit areas of the Irrawaddy Delta.
