A Dutch charter plane en route to Sri Lanka was forced to make an emergency landing in the Indian state of Goa after a bird flew into one of its engines, airport officials said Thursday.

The ArkeFly jet from Amsterdam to Colombo had stopped off in Goa and hit the bird soon after taking off from the former Portuguese colony at 7:30 am (0200 GMT), forcing it to return and land.

"The bird was tucked inside the engine, which was damaged," an airport spokesman told reporters.

None of the 263 passengers on board the Boeing 767 aircraft was injured and alternative arrangements were made to fly them on to Sri Lanka, the spokesman added.
