AMSTERDAM — Research has indicated that Dutch people are the world's biggest sleepers, spending on average seven hours and 32 minutes in dreamland each day. The global average is seven hours and six minutes.
The international research conducted by home furnishings store IKEA was designed to discover how Europeans, Asians and North Americans use their bedroom. A total of 14,000 people across 27 countries were surveyed.
The research found that Austrians are crazy about their bedrooms, but rarely have sex there. Malaysian nationals frequently have sex in their bedrooms, but only sleep on average 6 hours and 36 minutes.
News agency ANP also reported that the Gallup International Poll found that 43 percent of Malaysians have sex every day in their bedroom. The Malaysians are thus the world's most sexually active people.
Among the Swedes and Icelanders, a total of 72 percent believe the bedroom is the best place for sex, while just 20 percent of the Chinese respondents shared that opinion. Among the Dutch, 48 percent prefer to have sex in the bedroom.
Of the North Americans, 20 percent like to have sex outside the bedroom. The other preferred locations were not indicated.
Austrians ranked low in sexual activity, but were the most satisfied with their bedrooms, ahead of Belgians and Swiss nationals. Russians were the least satisfied.
The IKEA research also found that 75 percent of the survey respondents make their bed every day and those who frequently change their mattress have the most sex.
The most common object in a bedroom is the alarm clock. In the Netherlands, a total of 98 percent of respondents said they used an alarm clock.
While not stated in the survey, it can probably be assumed that 100 percent of them have a bed in the bedroom!
In the Dutch section of the survey, a lot of attention was also placed on how people sleep. The results show that 46 percent sleep on their side, 31 percent in a foetal position, 12 percent on their stomach and 8 percent slept on their back.
