The Dutch retirement income system has been named the world’s best for the third year in a row.

This is the conclusion of the global pension index published on Tuesday by the Mercer consultancy firm.

The Melbourne Mercer Global Pension Index compares the pension systems of 16 countries. Australia came second, Switzerland third. Japan, India and China came last.

The pension systems were assessed based on a number of criteria, including the relation between state pensions and supplementary private pensions, the income afforded by the system and the degree to which elderly people take part in employment.
