Dutch number plates recall Nazi collaborators

About 100 car licence plates with the letters ‘NSB’ on them were issued by the Dutch authorities a few days ago. ‘NSB’ is used as an abbreviation for Nationaal-Socialistische Beweging National Socialist Movement, the Dutch group which collaborated with the Nazis during the Second World War.

The embarrassing gaffe was spotted by the mass-circulation newspaper. “It was caused by a computer programming error,” explains an official from the government department responsible. “We corrected it immediately”.

The licence plates displaying the offending letters were recalled by the department on Monday morning after the first angry complaints by drivers. Department officials say that a number of letter combinations are automatically stopped from being replicated on number plates. These include the abbreviations for political parties and the like.
