Explosion in Amsterdam, At least two people were injured in an explosion in Amsterdam on Friday. One of the unnamed victims is said to be seriously hurt with burn injuries following the explosion in a squat on Tweede Sweelinckstraat in the Pijp district. A third person was found unhurt in the street. Police believe the squatters were using bottles of gas to heat water and one of these bottles may have exploded, Amsterdam station AT5 reported.

Woman, 91, held for shoplifting

Police in Zoetermeer have arrested a 91-year-old resident of the city for suspected shoplifting. Staff in a shop allegedly saw the woman putting a box of chocolates and two packets of cigarettes in her bag. They also claim she had stolen items on previous occasions. The woman was given a warning and banned from entering the shop of a year.

Four ministers to fill PM's shoes

The duties of Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende will be assumed by four ministers while he is on holiday from 11 July to 1 August. The four are Deputy prime ministers Gerrit Zalm and Laurens Jan Brinkhorst, Environment Minister Syblilla Dekker and Immigration Minister Rita Verdonk. They will each act in Balkenende's place for a portion of his holiday.

Body in burning car identified

Police have identified the man whose body was found in a burning car in Maastricht last week. The victim was a 45-year-old resident of the city but he has not been publicly named. The fire was caused by an mechanical fault, police say.
