Building companies fined EUR 135m

Dutch competition watchdog NMa has fined construction companies another EUR 135 million on top of the EUR 100 million fine previously imposed on 22 companies for the building fraud affair. The NMa said on Monday 344 companies had been issued fines ranging from several thousand euros to millions of euros for participating in illegal cartels and secret agreements on large-scale infrastructure projects such as the HSL South high-speed train line. The fines put an end to the accelerated procedure introduced after the parliamentary inquiry into the building fraud scandal, which surfaced in 2001. Criminal inquiries continue.

Minister might sue Telegraaf

Justice Minister Piet Hein Donner is considering taking legal action against newspaper De Telegraaf after it claimed on Saturday that the Christian Democrat CDA minister was personally involved the laying of charges against the woman who ran over and killed an alleged purse-snatcher last week. The newspaper has since published a retraction, but Donner is not satisfied and insists he was not involved in the decision to charge the 43-year-old woman. The minister is considering his legal options.

Suspect arrested over cafe death

Police have arrested a 31-year-old man on suspicion of stabbing and killing the 54-year-old manager of the Nijlân café in Leeuwarden on the night of 17 January. The suspect is a relative of the victim. The man was arrested in Leeuwarden. A 46-year-old café patron was also injured in the suspected robbery attempt.

Dutch 'sex and drugs' image to change
Foreign Minister Ben Bot intends to correct the international image of the Netherlands this year, asserting that many people have a distorted, one-dimensional image of the country. Speaking at the annual conference of Dutch ambassadors on Monday, Bot said a Belgian politician recently referred to the Netherlands as a "cesspit of vice", while US television station Fox News has referred to the Dutch as "whore-mongering, coke-snorting child murderers".
