De Mol sells Noordzee, buys 538

Entrepreneur John de Mol and his company Talpa will take over Radio 538 and internet-based radio station juize.fm from US investment firm Advent International. Talpa is also selling its station Noordzee FM to Belgian company De Persgroep. Dutch regulations prevent one company owning two radio stations that have no government-imposed restrictions on broadcast material. Talpa thus had to discard Noordzee in order to buy 538. "We want to become a big player in television and radio to realise our multimedia plans," De Mol said. 538 is the most popular radio station in the Netherlands.

Van Gogh mural painted over

Artists Loes Diephuis and John Prop have painted over their mural of Theo van Gogh. Instead of the portrait of Van Gogh with angel wings and devils horns, they have put the text: 'All people are brothers', newspaper 'Het Parool' reported. The white letters are painted on a blue background and are surrounded by yellow stars, a reminder of the EU flag. Vandals splashed grey paint over the mural of Van Gogh for the second time last week, prompting the artists to paint a more "hopeful proverb". The painting is located close to where Van Gogh was murdered last November by a suspected Islamic militant.

Traffic argument death was an 'accident'

The 19-year-old man who killed a 20-year-old woman during a traffic altercation on Easter Sunday has said via his lawyer he did not see the victim as he tried to escape from the argument. Witnesses have corroborated his story, the lawyer told newspaper 'Algemeen Dagblad'. The woman and a male friend confronted and intimidated the 19-year-old about his driving. When the defendant, who lives in The Hague, drove away from the scene, he collided with the woman, from Wateringen. She died later in hospital. The woman's friend claims the man had driven too slowly and braked unnecessarily, claims the man has denied.

Gullit resigns as Feyenoord coach

Feyenoord coach Ruud Gullit, 42, has resigned. Gullit was only in the position for one year, but felt he lacked support from the club's management. Feyenoord finished a disappointing 4th in the Dutch premier division this year. Assistant coach Zeljko Petrovic will also leave the Rotterdam club, 'RTL News' reported. Gullit was appointed last year after Bert van Marwijk took up a post with Borussia Dortmund.
