Rotterdam coalition moves a step closer

The Labour Party (PvdA), green-left GroenLinks, Liberals (VVD) and Christian Democrats have entered the final stages in discussions to form a coalition to run Rotterdam. The parties asked Mayor Ivo Opstelten to re-designate the official in charge of the preliminary stage of the process as 'formateur' to help them come to a final deal. GroenLinks joined the coalition talks after the Liberals refused to work with the Socialist Party (SP). Leefbaar Rotterdam, the second-largest party on the city council, has refused to serve in an administration with the Labour Party.

Public wants more Dutch-newcomer contact

Dutch people want more contact between the 'indigenous' community and 'newcomers', according to a survey carried out by pollster Maurice de Hond and Radio Netherlands. A large majority of the 1,800 respondents said the relations between the different communities in the Netherlands were poor. But only 58 percent said they valued the cultural diversity in the country. Some 86 percent of Dutch expats support cultural diversity, De Hond said.
