Queen congratulations Blom on gold

Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands has sent a telegram to congratulate pole vaulter Rens Blom for earning the country's first gold medal at the world championships in Helsinki. Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende phoned his congratulations to Blom who achieved his seasonal best of 5.80 meters to win the medal.

Confession in transsexual death case

A 20-year-old man has been remanded in custody for two weeks after he admitted killing a Thai transsexual in Amsterdam. The body of 41-year-old Irene was found in her house in the Red Light District in mid July. She had been stabbed several times.

Netherlands gets its first work holiday camp

The first work holiday camp in the Netherlands opens for business in Drenthe province in 2008. Project developer Polderland has bought the Raatakkers campsite and plans to turn it into a EUR 12 million fitness park for both the able-bodied and people with disabilities. The latter will be able to include rehabilitation exercises in their holiday.

Man arrested over race bomb hoax

Police in Rotterdam have arrested a 23-year-old man who is the main suspect in the investigation into a hoax bomb threat to the 'Monaco aan de Maas' Formula-1 race event last weekend. The man confessed, police say.
