Dutch minister supports 'naming and shaming'
Justice Minister Ivo Opstelten wants to release the names of children caught using drugs to parents, teachers and fellow students.
In an interview with populist daily De Telegraaf, the minister says he has no problem with 'naming and shaming' cannabis-smoking school children.A survey carried out by De Telegraaf shows a majority of those interviewed support the idea, and the minister apparently agrees.
"Kids who do bad things should be exposed", the minister said. "Smoking cannabis is bad, it is wrong to do it in school."The minister is not yet ready to compel schools to report kids caught smoking cannabis to the police, even though he did say it was counterproductive for schools not to report drug use for fear of damaging their reputation: "The reputation of a school will be more at risk when this type of incident goes unreported."
Mr Opstelten expects parents to take action when their kids are caught using drugs. "Schools must hold the parents responsible for the drug use of their children, because it all starts with parents and kids."
