Dutch minister: economic recovery may falter

The current trend toward economic recovery could be interrupted by a rapid increase in oil prices.

Dutch Economic Affairs Minister Maxime Verhagen made his remark on Tuesday following a visit to Saudi Arabia. "Stability in the oil market is a common interest of producers and consumers", the minister said. In the past few months, oil prices have gone up substantially as the result of unrest in the Arab world.

Saudi Arabia is willing to increase production, but Oil Minister Ali Al Naimi pointed out to the Dutch economic affairs minister that speculation was partly responsible for the increase in oil prices.
