Dutch mental health patients hit by cuts

The government’s recent budget cuts in mental health services is causing many patients who now have to pay deductibles to stop their treatment or not begin one at all, the GGZ national mental health service says.

Based on reports gathered from branches across the country, GGZ says changes in deductibles, budget and fee arrangements and treatment plans is badly affecting patients with mental health problems. The national mental services expects to lose 5,000 full-time staff this year alone. Most of those to be made redundant, GGZ warns, are doctors and nurses, which will seriously compromise the quality of the care it provides. cl
